2000 Dodge Neon Camshaft Seal Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Camshaft Seal on 2000 Dodge Neon?
A: Before repairing the camshaft oil seal, secure the camshaft and crankshaft to stop them from rotating as the timing belt is removed. Before anything else, remove the crankshaft damper, front timing belt cover, timing belt and the tensioner assembly. Install the special tools C-4687 or modified C-4687-1 to support the camshaft sprocket, loosen and eliminate the attaching bolt and then remove the sprocket from the camshaft. After that, take off the rear timing belt cover and use the right pry tool to gently remove the camshaft seal, while making sure you don't damage either the camshaft seal or the cylinder head seal bore. Check that there is no sign of varnish, dirt or scratches on the shaft seal lip; if any are found, work with 400-grit paper to remove them. To install, attach the camshaft seal level with the cylinder head, using Special Tool MD998306. Put the rear timing belt cover back on, center the camshaft sprocket in position, hold it in place with Special Tools C-4687 and modified C-4687-1 and tighten the bolt to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.). Then, insert the reinstall the timing belt tensioner, timing belt, front cover and crankshaft damper.
