2001 Dodge Neon Camshaft Seal Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Camshaft Seal on 2001 Dodge Neon?
A: Engine damage may occur if you remove the timing belt with the camshaft or crankshaft still rotating, so stop them first. Get rid of the timing belt tensioner assembly from the engine at the start. Pull Special Tool C-4687 to hold the camshaft sprocket as you remove its bolt using Special Tool C-4687-1, then take the sprocket off the camshaft. After that, lift the rear timing belt cover and use a pry tool to remove the camshaft seal without harming either the seal surface or the retaining tube in the cylinder head. Check that the shaft seal has no varnish, dirt or nicks; if it does, polish it with 400 grit paper. When installing, set the camshaft seal beside the cylinder head using MD998306 and then fit the rear timing belt cover back in place. With Special Tools C-4687 and modified C-4687-1 attached to hold the camshaft sprocket and with CMT-2, tighten the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.). Then, put in the timing belt tensioner, timing belt, front cover and crankshaft vibration damper.
