2000 Dodge Neon Shock Absorber Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Shock Absorber on 2000 Dodge Neon?
A: Raise the vehicle first, then take off the tire and wheel assembly from where you must remove the strut. If you remove both strut assemblies, be sure to label each one right or left like they were in the car when they were originally installed. After that, free the screw on the ground strap at the back of the strut and if there is an ABS wheel speed sensor, remove the second screw for it. Be sure not to move the serrated strut assembly-to-steering knuckle bolts during removal; hold them still as you remove the nuts and then tap them out with a pin punch. Let the bolts holding the strut to the steering knuckle go loose, then lift the vehicle by only lowering the front end just below where the hood starts and remove the three nuts that attach the strut to the strut tower before removing the assembly from the car. Always use the instructions when taking apart and putting together the samples. When putting in the strut assembly, add it to the strut tower, so that the studs match the holes in the tower and close each stud with a three nut, fastening them with 34 Nm (300 inch lbs.) torque. Hold the hood fastened with the serrated bolts during the nuts installation. Line up the beam of the strut assembly with the steering knuckle, fit the two bolts to it, tighten the nuts on the bolts with 53 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) torque and tighten them 90° further. If the unit includes an ABS sensor, connect the sensor to the back of the strut using its screw tightened to 13 Nm (120 inch lbs.) and then connect the ground strap to the back of the strut again using a screw tightened to 13 Nm (120 inch lbs.). Place the tire and wheel back on now, tightening the wheel mounting nuts loosely in the correct order to one-half of the full specification, then redo the same sequence to secure the nuts at 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.).
