Q: How to Install a Crankshaft Seal on 2000 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: The crankshaft main bearing seal contains two Viton seals and only the upper half can be put in without the crankshaft. A new upper seal is installed with a new lower seal and the lower seal cannot be installed until the rear main bearing cap is taken off. When setting up with the crankshaft out, discard the old upper seal after you remove the crankshaft. Cover the rear cap's surface, making sure the seal groove is clean and inspect the oil hole for burrs. Use a small amount of oil to moisten the new upper rear seal lips and then install it so that the white paint is facing the engine's back. Set the crankshaft into the cylinder block, lubricate the lower rear seal lips and fit the new seal with white paint toward the rear into the cap of the lower rear oil bearing. Working carefully, put a 5 mm drop of Loctite 518 on both sides of the main bearing cap but do not let it come in contact with the rubber seal. Immediately install the bearing cap to the cylinder block right after applying the sealant. Insert the bearing cap into the slot and ensure the alignment dowel is still there before locking with the cap bolts. Don't remove extra material and tap the rear cap only twice for accurate contact. Oil the cap bolts and place all bearing caps on the engine, then tighten all screws alternately to 115 Nm torque. Before fitting the oil pan, insert the oil pump. Then apply Mopar Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant to the intersection of the bearing cap and block and fill enough sealant to squeeze a little out, wiping off the extra material from the base of the oil pan before quickly fitting the oil pan. While the crankshaft is in place, take off the oil pan, oil pump and rear main bearing cap, toss the old lower oil seal and remove the old upper oil seal. Carefully clean the mating surfaces in the cylinder block, lightly grease the new seal lips on the top piece and also loosen at least two bearing caps, those ahead of the rear cap, so that fitting the piece is easier. Insert and rotate the upper seal into the cylinder block using the included tool, so the white side is pointing to the back, then put the new lower rear bearing oil seal into the bearing cap with white painted side pointed toward the back. For each side of the rear main bearing cap, put on a 5 mm drop of Loctite 518, assemble quickly and position the white paint at the rear. Place the bearing cap correctly, screw on oiled and cleaned cap bolts and tighten them in alternate order to 115 Nm. First, set in place the oil pump, then sealing the bearing cap-block connection with Mopar Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant and right away install the oil pan. To work on the lower seal, take off the oil pan, oil pump and rear main bearing cap, throwing away the old part. Clean the areas where the cap mates to the housing, carefully put a new upper seal in place, give the new lower seal lip a light coating of oil, then install the new seal into the rear bearing cap so it faces the rear. Add a 5 mm drop of Loctite 518 to the sides of the rear main bearing cap, put the bearing cap in place, insert and torque the cap bolts at 115 Nm, then cover the joint with silicone sealant and install the oil pan as quickly as possible after.
