- Q: How to Properly Install and Remove a Piston in an Engine on 2000 Dodge Ram 1500?A: Unplug the harness, take the engine out, remove the cylinder head and oil pan and then remove the piston. Eliminate the ridge on the cylinder bores with a good reamer before removing the pistons to protect their outer surface. Find every connecting rod by its cylinder number and match each cap, then take out the caps and fit the connecting rod bolt guide set onto the bolts. Start by turning the crankshaft to center the connecting rod; with it kept at BDC, use this rotation to take out the piston and connecting rod from the top of the cylinder block. After taking off the bearing cap, set it back on the mating rod. Gaps in the compression ring should not line up with the gaps in the oil ring rail when installing. It is important to make sure the oil ring expander ends meet and the rail spacings are correctly set before using the ring compressor. Place both the piston head and rings in clean engine oil, then slide Piston Ring Compressor Tool C-385 over the piston. Use the special wrench to tighten the clamp without shifting the rings. Mount connecting rod bolt protectors, ensuring the long side is on the side that shows a number. Use the crankshaft to place the journal of the connecting rod at the center of the cylinder bore, making sure the numbers match. Add the rod and piston to the cylinder bore, move the rod over the journal on the crankshaft and gently tap the piston in as the rod is aligned with the crankshaft journal. Arrange the notch on the piston at the front of the engine and place the thicker part of the connecting rod bore where it faces the crankshaft journal fillet. After you check the matching numbers for the connecting rod, connecting rod cap and cylinder bore, put nuts on the cleansed and greased rod bolts, then tighten all of them to a torque of 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) When all is ready, put the oil pan, cylinder head and engine back into the car.
