2000 Dodge Ram 1500 Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Steering Knuckle on 2000 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: To work on the steering knuckle, lift and support the vehicle, then take off the wheel and tire unit. Following this, get rid of the brake caliper and rotor. First, remove the cotter pin and nut from the tie-rod end and use Puller C-3894-A to detach the tie rod end from the knuckle. Following this, remove the cotter pins and the nuts from the upper and lower ball joints, unhitch the upper joint from the knuckle using remover AID-990635 and release the lower joint with remover C-4150A, before taking out the knuckle. To mount the knuckle, set it onto the ball joints, affix the lower ball joint nuts, tighten the nut on the top ball joint to 81 Nm (60 ft. lbs.) and install the cotter pin. After tightening the lower ball joint nut to 129 Nm (95 ft. lbs.) on LD or 149 Nm (110 ft. lbs.) on HD, then install the cotter pin. Put the tie rod end back onto the steering knuckle, fix the nut with 108 Nm (80 ft. lbs.) and insert the cotter pin. The last step is to put on the brake rotor and caliper, then the wheel and tire assembly and lower the car after removing the support.
