Before you begin service or repairs on a (HD) 4X2's steering knuckle, use mineral spirits to wipe the tapers of the
Ball Joint studs and remove any buildup. Align the
Speed Sensor opening of the hub/bearing by placing it in the front portion of the vehicle. First, place the hub/bearing on the steering knuckle and tighten the bolts to 176 Nm (130 ft. lbs.). Then, put the knuckle into place on both upper and lower ball joints and tighten the nuts as follows: upper to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) and lower to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). With the hydraulic jack out of the lower arm, fasten the
Tie Rod End and turn the nut to a torque of 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.). If you have them, put in the ABS wheel speed sensor, along with the brake shield, rotor and caliper. As the final step, attach the wheel and tire assembly, take out the support, lower the car and have a wheel alignment performed.
