2000 Dodge Ram 2500 Timing Cover Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Timing Cover on 2000 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: For timing cover repairs, you should begin by unhooking the negative terminal on the battery. First, disconnect the water pump, next the power steering pump and lastly take out the vibration damper. Take off the oil pan bolts and unscrew one front mounting bolt from either side. After that, remove the cover bolts and take away the chain case cover and gasket, being careful not to touch or damage the oil pan gasket. Try to loosen the oil seal with a suitable tool so you do not harm the seal surface on the cover case. The mating surfaces of the chain case cover and cylinder block will work best if they're clean and smooth and also clean the place you will mount the water pump. Using a fresh chain case cover gasket, install the cover on the oil pan carefully to prevent damaging its gasket, apply a little Mopar Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant where the timing chain cover gasket joins the oil pan gasket and then easier. Hold the seal with the smaller diameter over Front Oil Seal installation Tool 6635, put both in the groove of the tool and put everything together on the crankshaft. Tighten down the lower chain case cover bolts to 13 Nm (10 ft. lbs.) so that the motor does not tilt as you put on the seal and use the vibration damper bolt to draw the seal onto the crankshaft. Unscrew the 4 front cover assembly bolts, adjust the front cover assembly and then tighten the chain case cover bolts to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) and the oil pan bolts to 24 Nm (215 in. lbs.). Unscrew the vibration damper bolt, remove the seal installation tool, look at the vibration damper's seal flange and put the vibration damper in place. Put the water pump and housing, together with new gaskets, into place and tighten the bolts, setting them to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.), before you fit the power steering pump. Apply the serpentine belt, the cooling system fan and fasten both using the directions given. Fully fill the cooling system, attach the negative cable back to the battery and run the engine to see if any leaks develop.
