2000 Dodge Ram 3500 Camshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Camshaft on 2000 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: Before you can remove the camshaft, take out the radiator, A/C Condenser (if present), engine cover, intake manifold and cylinder head covers. After that, remove the timing cover from the case and the timing chain. Deconstruct the valvetrain by taking out the rocker arms, push rods and tappets and make sure to identify each so you can put them back in place. After that, take off the distributor and raise out the oil pump and drive shaft. Take out the camshaft thrust plate and pay attention to the oil tab while you install a long bolt into the front end of the camshaft. Apply fitment oil to the camshaft lobes and bearing journals and place the camshaft in the cylinder block only 51 mm from the end. Place C-3509 at the back of the distributor drive gear and secure it there with the distributor lock plate bolt, so the camshaft won't move too deeply. Adjust the chain oil tab and thrust plate so that the tang connects to the lower right hole in the thrust plate, then tighten them all to 24 Nm. Set one sprocket at a time on the bench, aligning their timing marks and slide the timing chain around them both. Turn the crankshaft and camshaft so that the keyway is lined up with each sprocket, keep both sprockets lifted and kept firmly in place and slide them over the shafts, checking the placement of the timing marks. Install the camshaft bolt and accompanying washer before turning the fastener to 68 Nm. Check the end play of the camshaft and, if necessary, put in a new thrust plate. Be sure to place each tappet in its original place and change out all the tappets if the camshaft is also being replaced. After reinstalling the distributor and distributor drive shaft, add in the push rods, rocker arms, timing case cover, cylinder head covers, intake manifold, engine cover, the A/C Condenser if there is one and end with the radiator. Fill the cooling system back up and start the engine to see if anything is leaking.
