2000 Dodge Ram 3500 Fan Clutch Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Fan Clutch on 2000 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: To deal with and repair the fan clutch, the first thing to do is remove the negative battery cable. Lift out the throttle cable from the top of the fan shroud. The coolant tank on 8.0L V-10 cars can be left, but on all others, remove it from the fan shroud, placing it aside without draining the coolant. The mounting nut on the fan blade assembly is turned counterclockwise by using Sp346 from the Snap-On Tool Set, Special Spanner Wrench 6958 and Adapter Pins 8346. Don't take the fan/viscous fan drive assembly out of the car or remove the fan blade assembly from the viscous fan drive now. After that, take out the four bolts connecting the fan shroud to the radiator and remove them both together. Don't set the lubricated fan drive horizontally after removing it to stop the silicone fluid from accumulating in the bearings. Please do not take out the water pump pulley-to-water pump bolts, as spring tension keeps it in place. Afterward, take away the four bolts securing the fan assembly to the viscous fan drive, as on some belt-driven engines with reversing fans, the parts are clearly marked with the word Reverse and installing them incorrectly can cause your engine to overheat. First, set the fan blade on the viscous fan drive and secure it with bolts that should be tightened to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.) torque. Insert the fan shroud and fan blade or viscous fan drive, place the whole unit back into the vehicle, install the fan shroud and attach the fan or viscous fan drive assembly to the water pump shaft. For everything except the 8.0L V-10, put the coolant tank into its bracket on the fan shroud and secure it, next link the throttle cable to the fan shroud and lastly, attach the negative battery cable. Once you connect a new viscous fan drive, bring the engine to about 2000 rpm and maintain that speed for two minutes to evenly distribute the fluid.
