2000 Dodge Ram 3500 Oxygen Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain an Oxygen Sensor on 2000 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: It is important to clean around the oxygen sensor plug, as no grease can be applied where it connects to the wiring and you mustn't solder any wires to the oxygen sensor harness, as it relies on a source of oxygen from its outside wiring, so altering it would be wrong. Oxygen sensors are labelled as 1/1, 1/2, 1/3, 2/1 and 2/2. Upstream and downstream sensors are installed at the inlet and outlet ends of the catalytic converter for 3.9/5.2/5.9L LDC Non-California engines and certain California 3.9L engines and on HDC engines, the sensors are placed on the left and right exhaust down pipes. In a pre-catalyst/post-catalyst design for HDC engines, the sensors stand at the beginning and end points of the catalytic converter. In 5.2/5.9L California engines, sensors 1/1 and 2/1 are placed ahead of the mini-cats and sensors 1/2 and 2/2 are found after the mini-cats. After turning off the engine, give the exhaust manifold, exhaust pipes and catalytic converter some time to cool before you raise the car. Always handle the O2S sensor by the connector, not by the wire leading to it. The tool you need for installing or removing the O2S sensor is specially designed for its job. Remember, the threads on new oxygen sensors are pre-treated with anti-seize compound, so there's no need to add more. Mount the O2S sensor and tighten it to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.), next connect the O2S wire connector and then lower the vehicle.
