2000 Dodge Stratus Camshaft Seal Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Camshaft Seal on 2000 Dodge Stratus?
A: Before changing the camshaft oil seal, stop the camshaft and crankshaft from rotating while the timing belt is off to avoid hurting the engine. Take out the crankshaft damper, cover for the front timing belt, timing belt itself and the tensioner before continuing. C-4687 and modified C-4687-1 are special tools to hold the camshaft sprocket while you undo the attaching bolt. After that, undo the rear timing belt cover and use a gentle pry tool to take out the camshaft seal, taking extra care not to damage the camshaft seal or the cylinder head seal bore with any scratches. Make sure the shaft seal lip doesn't have any varnish, dirt or nicks and polish it with 400 grit paper if you find any. When installing, position the camshaft seal concentrically with the cylinder head using Special Tool MD998306. Set the rear cover into place, then use Special Tools C-4687 and adapted C-4687-1 to tighten the retaining bolt on the camshaft sprocket to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.). Reattach the timing belt tensioner, timing belt, front cover and crankshaft damper after you have cleaned the engine.
