- Q: How to Service and Repair a Rocker Arm Assembly on 2000 Dodge Stratus?A: First, take out the cylinder head cover and look for the rocker arm shaft assemblies before doing anything else. Take off the fasteners connecting the shafts and then remove each set of rocker arm shaft assemblies from the cylinder head. Take out the bolts holding the rocker arm assemblies to the motor shaft and then take the rocker arms and their spacers from the shaft, making sure not to mix them up. Look over the rocker arms to see if they are damaged, have scratches or the rollers show excessive wear; replace in case any defects are found. If damage or wear is found on the mountings of the shafts, replace them as necessary. Oil flows through the rocker arm shaft; clean out the oil holes and lubricate the arms and the spacers before replacing them where they belonged. Before installing the rocker arm shafts, set the crankshaft three notches back from Tdc. Once the lash adjuster is installed, press down lightly and be sure the adjusters remain about halfway full. Where the end of the plunger moves too far, dunk the rocker arm assembly in fresh oil and operate the valves until the gap is correct; get a new assembly if this doesn't work. Install the rocker arm and shaft assemblies so that the Notch in the rocker arm shaft faces up and closer to the timing belt side of the engine and put back the retainers to their original places on the exhaust and intake shafts. During intake rocker arm shaft assembly, check that the plastic spacers do not touch the spark plug tubes; rotate them instead if they do, to make sure the shaft is not pushed down. At last, tighten all the bolts to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.) exactly as seen on the chart. Such a noise can result from different components.
