2000 Dodge Viper Power Steering Hose Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Hose for Return Hose on 2000 Dodge Viper?
A: Start by undoing the hose clamp from the lower end of the return hose underneath the steering gear; undo the hose and allow all the excess fluid to flow out. Take off the clamp at the power steering fluid reservoir, disconnect the upper hose from the fitting and handle the plastic reservoir with care. Then, take off the clamp securing the upper or lower hose to the cooler and pull out the faulty hose. Install the hose clamps along the new return hose, placing one right by the end and one about 1 inch inward at the other end, before you begin. When installing the upper hose, fit the end of the hose to the power steering fluid reservoir fitting and clamp it over the upset bead. Join one end of the lower hose to the steering gear, making sure it doesn't come into contact with a sharp edge and secure a clamp beyond the upset bead on the hose fitting. Put the new hose onto the right fitting on the power steering fluid cooler, clip it and confirm that it goes past the outward pocket on the pipe's end. Pour in Mopar Power Steering Fluid or its alternative, up to the appropriate level in the reservoir. Let the engine run briefly, turn it off and add fluid until the level becomes constant. First, raise the front of your car, start the engine, steer it slowly from side to side, turn off the engine and check to see if your car needs additional fluid before driving. Lower the car and steer it as far left as possible, then as far right and check the fluid level once again with the engine off. Should the fluid seem excessive in foam, just let the vehicle stand for some time and begin the process again. Make sure to inspect every hose connection to see if it is leaking.
