2000 Dodge Viper Steering Wheel Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Safely Remove and Install a Steering Wheel and Airbag Module on 2000 Dodge Viper?
A: Before pulling out the steering wheel, align the front wheels and detach the negative cable from the battery, so the battery cannot be used accidently. Let the air bag system capacitor de-energize for at least 2 minutes before you take out the air bag module mounted on the steering wheel using the rear side mounting bolts in the wheel spokes. Take out the air bag connector from its module and remove the wiring lead from the horn switch's Clock Spring connector, then remove the steering wheel retaining nut. Make sure to engage the puller bolts fully in the steering wheel so you don't strip the threads. Use a Snap-On CJ2001P puller or its equivalent to take out the steering wheel in a safe way, avoiding any heat used. Feeding the Clock Spring lead over the steering wheel and following this with a fit on the shaft ensures it lies flat against the hub. Tighten the steering wheel retaining nut to a torque of 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.). Next, attach the air bag harness and horn switch wire. Guarantee functional connections by tightening the fasteners for air bag modules using only the correct fasteners and 10 Nm (90 inch lbs.) torque. With no one inside the vehicle, plug a DRB scan tool into the diagnostic data link connector, turn the key to the ON position and then link the negative cable to the battery. Read all the fault codes from the vehicle, erasing the stored faults only when no active codes are present. You should let the air bag system show that it is working by allowing the "air bag" light to illuminate for nearly ten seconds before it goes out. Should the air bag warning lamp show a fault code, check the system for any indicated problems. Then, activate the horn, lights and steering wheel components to be sure they're working, return the radio and clock to default if need be and perform a test drive to test the steering and speed control systems.
