2000 Dodge Viper Timing Chain Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Timing Chain on 2000 Dodge Viper?
A: First, eliminate the timing chain cover, next remove the bolt that fastens the camshaft sprocket and then remove the timing chain along with the camshaft sprocket. Pull off the crankshart sprocket with a suitable puller to avoid scratching it on the crankshaft surface. After choosing the correct new crankshaft sprocket, put it on the crankshaft and set it firmly in place with adequate tool and mallet. Spin the crankshaft sprocket until the number "12" is visible on the timing mark. Check that the timing mark on the chain is at 6 o'clock as you put the chain on the camshaft sprocket. Then place and secure the chain on the crankshaft sprocket, followed by installing the camshaft sprocket. Align the timing marks with a straight edge. Place the camshaft sprocket bolt and washer and tighten them to 74.5 Nm (55 ft. lbs.). Spin the crankshaft two full revolutions and check if the timing marks match; if they don't, remove the cam sprocket and realign. If the camshaft end play doesn't match the recommended values in Engine, replace the thrust plate. Afterward, place the timing chain cover in place.
