Q: How to Remove and Install a Timing Cover on 2000 Dodge Viper?
A: Before removing the timing cover, loosen the battery cables, disconnect the air cleaner from the engines and unhook all the hoses from the throttle bodies. Release the content of the cooling system and remove the hoses linked to the engine and radiator. Next, get rid of the accessory drive belt, then the generator wiring and, finally, the generator. Should the car have air conditioning, loosen and take off the bolts that secure the compressor. If just changing the timing chain cover, you only need to unscrew the oil filter adapter and throw away the gasket beneath it; if you have to replace the whole cover, undo the oil cooler lines from beneath the filter adapter. Disconnect the electrical wire going to the camshaft sensor at the chain-case cover and take out the crankshaft damper. Unfasten the screws of the cover, take the chain case cover off and discard the crankshaft oil seal. For installation, make sure the top of the chain case cover and the cylinder block are also clean and have no burrs and don't forget to remove the crankshaft oil seal. Slide a new oil cover gasket on the block, rotate the crankshaft, line up the oil pump rotor flats with the crankshaft ones and make the pattern match. Establish proper connection between the oil pump and the crankshaft, after which install the timing chain cover screws and tighten them to 40 Nm or 30 ft. lbs. After fitting the crankshaft oil seal, place the crankshaft damper and pulley. Should the oil filter adapter have been removed, reinstall it with a new gasket and screw it in until you reach 11 Nm (95 in. lbs.). Should you remove the oil cooler lines, fit them back to the filter adapter fittings. On vehicles with an A/C system, put the compressor bolts through the cover and block and use a torque wrench to tighten them to 23 Nm (200 in. lbs.). Fit the generator into place and set the torque on the screws to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.), link the electrical cable of the cam sensor to the generator and strap the generator wiring to the accessories belts. Afterwards, put in the new air cleaner, refill the cooling system and attach the battery to the vehicle.
