2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Exhaust Valve Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair Exhaust Valve and Intake Valves on 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: You need to first lift out the cylinder head from the cylinder block to service or repair the valve. See that each valve spring is compressed with the Valve Spring Compressor Tool MD-998772A, next take off the valve locks, retainers, springs and valve stem oil seals and throw away the oil seals. With a smooth stone or a jeweler's file, remove any rough spots from the top of the valve stem, especially about the area for the locks. After removing the valves, keep them in order by placing them on a rack rung by rung, as they were extended. Afterward, carefully clean all parts of the valve stems and valve guide bores, lighten them with oil and place the valve back in its part of the cylinder that holds it. If you have 0.381 mm (0.015 inch) oversize valve stems, put in oversize oil seals as well when replacing the valve stem oil seals. Mount the valve spring and its retainer over the engine cylinder head, press the spring using the Valve Spring Compressor MD-998772A, hold the tool and put in the valve locks after the spring is held. Use a hammer to shake the valve spring from side to side at the engine head to test if it is pushed securely into the hole and also give a few taps to the top of the retainer to make certain the valve locks are correctly in place. After that, fit the engine cylinder head.
