2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Ball Joint Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Ball Joint on 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Before repairing or servicing the ball joint, take out the lower control arm from under the vehicle. Take apart the unit by removing the seal boot on the ball joint using a screwdriver or a similar tool. Place the Receiver, Special Tool 6908-2, on a hydraulic press underneath the lower control arm. Then lay the control arm on the Receiver, with the ball joint souces fitting into the cup on the Receiver. Attach the large end of Adapter, Special Tool 6804, to the ball joint and use the press to press the joint entirely out of the lower control arm. Whenever the tools, ball joint and arm have been taken away from the hydraulic press, you can begin assembly. Make sure the slot in the ball joint stud is pointing towards the lower control arm front isolator bushing as this will help with installing it on the steering knuckle. Put the ball joint into the bore on the control arm by hand and make sure it is straight. Use Special Tool 110106 and the plate on a press, invert the control arm, place the ball joint stud into the Installer's cup and lift the plate to compress the stud. Place the large end of the Special Tool 6804 onto the ball joint and, using light force, press it into the lower control arm until the ball joint bottoms into the control arm. With the old components removed, put the new boot over the ball joint seat so the lip pointing upward is outward toward the control arm. Use your hands to start the seal boot onto the ball joint, then set Installer, Special Tool 6758 over the boot's exterior and press it down flush with the top of the lower control arm. Remove the previous tool and then install the lower control arm under the car. If your ball joint features a grease fitting, put in grease once you have finished installing the lower control arm.
