2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Coil Springs Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix Coil Springs on 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Start by lifting the car, taking out the rear wheels and their assemblies, then proceed with coil spring service and repair. After that, get rid of the bolts attaching the watts link bell crank to the central axle, replace the bolts holding the stabilizer bar padding on the axle and carefully take the bar off. Place the transmission jack in the middle of the axle and lift it to hold the axle. First, undo the lower mounting bolts and nuts on the shock absorber at the axle and then begin jacking up the transmission until the coil springs come out along with the rubber isolators. To install, remove the rubber isolator from the original location, set it on the spring's end so that its rubber fingers slip around the coil and rest against its flat side. Since both sides are the same, either can be made the top or bottom of the coil spring. Try fitting the coil springs on top of the axle spring perches so that each spring's flat end is parallel to an imaginary line alongside the axle beam and the tops of the springs reach near the edges of the vehicle. Using the transmission jack, move it far enough to put the coil springs into the spring brackets and raise it until the eye bolts on the bottom of the shock absorbers are within range of the suspension axle brackets. Connect each shock absorber to its lower mounting bolt with the washer and nut and tune them carefully to a torque of 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.). Pull out the jack and link the bottom end of each stabilizer bar cushion retainer into the slot of the back axle, twisting the other end upward to slide in the mounting bolts and then tighten them to the specified pressure, 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). During installation, place the bell crank right side up so "BACK UP" can be read from the back over the top of the axle. Use the central bolt from the front to attach the watts link bell crank to the center of the axle and put a washer and a nut together on the bolt. Tighten this belt with 122 Nm (90 ft. lbs.) of torque. Attach the rear tire and wheel assemblies, tighten all wheel nuts to 135 Nm or 100 ft. lbs. and then successfully lower the vehicle to check the cureb height.
