2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service a Rear Wheel Bearing on 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Start by raising your vehicle and taking off the rear wheel and tire to service the bearing. If your car has drum brakes in the rear, first release the drum retaining clips and then remove the brake drum. Those using rear disc brakes should detach the disc brake caliper by removing its guide pin bolts and hanging it from the car with a wire hanger or bungee cord. Now, get rid of the brake rotor retaining clips and unscrew the brake rotor from the rear hub and bearing. After removing the dust cap from the hub and bearing, get rid of the retaining nut from the spindle and remove the hub and bearing together. Press the hub and bearing onto the spindle, put a NEW retaining nut in place and tighten it by hand to a torque of 217 Nm (160 ft. lbs.). After that, fit the dust caps and, for vehicles with drum brakes, place back the brake drum. On rear disc brake setups, first place the rotor, then add the disc brake caliper and lastly, tightly secure the guide pins to 22 Nm (192 inch lbs.). When you are ready, connect the rear tire and wheel back in place, secure them with at least 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) of torque on every wheel nut and carefully lower your vehicle.
