How to Remove Rear Suspension Coil Springs on Chrysler PT Cruiser?

First, raise the vehicle so its suspension is rounded off the ground to replace the coil springs. After that, get rid of the wheel mounting nuts and remove the rear tire and wheel assembly on each side. Removing the bolt, nut and washer connects three the watts link bell crank to the central axle. When there is a rear stabilizer bar, take out the bolt fixing the bar's cushion retainer to the axle on both sides, then lift each retainer out of the axle so the bar is hanging freely. Put a transmission jack or its equivalent under the axle and lift it until the axle is held up. Then on each end, take out the lower bolt, nut and washer that hold the shock absorber to the car's axle. Remove the lower jack support so the coil springs can be taken out of the axle and at the end, take off the coil springs and rubber isolators.

How to Install Rear Coil Springs on Chrysler PT Cruiser?

Before installing the rear coil springs, place a rubber isolator on both ends so the rubber fingers go around the spring and the rubber abutment touches the flat part of the spring. Both dual ends of the coil spring are alike, so the spring can be oriented with the same design as the top or bottom. With the axle spring perches in place, fit the coil springs on top so the springs are facing the correct way on the car. Make sure each upper coil end is by the outside edge of the car by rotating the springs with the rubber isolators until their flat end lines up with an imaginary line parallel to the axle beam. Place a transmission jack under the coil springs, move it until the mounting bracket holes align with the shock absorber lower mounting eyes and use a jack to attach lower mounting bolts with axle adapter brackets through both. Raise the jack so that the shock absorber lower mounting bolts are ready to be inserted, connect a washer and nut to each end of them and tighten everything to 88 Nm (65 ft. lbs.). Once the jack is removed, if a rear stabilizer bar is there, place the lower ends of both stabilizer bar retainers into the slots at the rear of the axle and angle the tops upward to set in the bolts, tightening them to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.). When installing both the watts links and bell crank to the axle, set the bell crank so that "BACK UP" can be read from the back above the axle. Cap the watts link bell crank to the axle by putting a bolt, washer and nut in the center and tightening them to 149 Nm (110 ft. lbs.). With the vehicle on a lift, fit the tires and wheels on both sides, tightening their mount nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). When you lower the vehicle, check that it is at the correct height from the curb.
