2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser CV Boot Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Replace a CV Boot on the Outer CV Joint on 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Before replacing the outer C/V joint seal, first take the driveshaft assembly out of the vehicle. When the seal is removed, throw away the large clamp that holds the sealing boot in place as well as the small clamp around the boot and the interconnecting shaft and lift the sealing boot off the outer C/V joint housing. After cleaning around the joint, lift the interconnecting shaft into a vise to stabilize it along the shaft and start tapping or see if you can just remove the circlip and outer CV joint by hand. Review the outer C/V joint, especially where it's connected to the interconnecting joint, for unusual wear; if anything is worn, the whole driveshaft assembly should be replaced. During installation, slide the new sealing boot and the retaining clamp over the interconnecting shaft until the raised part of the boot is in the groove. Make sure the splines of the connecting shaft are aligned with those in the outer C/V joint. Then tap the joint into position over the shaft, pushing until fully seated. Spread half the grease from the package into the outer C/V joint assembly housing and the rest into the seal boot. Clamp the seal onto the shaft using the crimper, Special Tool C-4975-A, so that it does not get dimpled or stretched when you assemble the interconnecting shaft. Put the sealing boot in its groove around the outer C/V joint housing, clamp it like before and repeat. After that, reinstall the driveshaft assembly onto your vehicle.
