2001 Chrysler Sebring Catalytic Converter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Catalytic Converter on 2001 Chrysler Sebring?
A: To maintain the catalytic converter, start by raising the vehicle on a hoist, putting penetrating oil on the resonator/pipe assembly band clamp and on the fasteners holding the catalytic converter to the exhaust manifold. Lift the ground strap from the muffler and then remove the clamp from the band on the resonator/pipe assembly. Handle the rubber isolators by hand and use soapy water or spray silicone lubricant. It's important not to use petroleum-based lubricants. Remove the isolators from the mounts under the muffler and pull out the full assembly of the resonator/pipe and muffler/pipe. Unplug the downstream oxygen sensor, remove the screws fastening the catalytic converter to the exhaust manifold and pull the catalytic converter out of the car, throwing away the gasket. Inspect for flow problems, look inside the element with a borescope or a flashlight for cracks or changes in the substrate and figure out the cause behind any issue before deciding to replace it. When putting on the gasket, clean the surfaces around the manifold where it seals and add a fresh gasket to the exhaust manifold. During a replacement, take the downstream oxygen sensor from the old unit and add it to the new catalytic converter. Screw the catalytic converter to the exhaust manifold and secure the resonator/pipe and muffler/pipe assembly to the catalytic converter's outlet pipe. Insert the support isolators in the muffler supports, arrange the exhaust system for a clean and straight fit and make sure all the support isolators are carrying equal weight. Apply 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.) to attach the catalytic converter to the exhaust manifold and 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) to attach the resonator/pipe assembly band clamp. Once that's done, fasten the ground strap to the muffler and place the vehicle on the ground.
