2001 Chrysler Sebring Parking Brake Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain Your Parking Brake Cable for Optimal Performance on 2001 Chrysler Sebring?
A: To replace or service either parking brake cable in the rear, take out the console in the center and lower the parking brake lever. Release the tension in the park brake cable by untwisting the adjusting nut at the output of the cable, then remove the cable from the tension equalizer at the rear. Next, slide back the rear seat and pull off the scuff plates from the right and left sill plates on the rear door. Push the rear carpeting forward so the park brake cables are visible. Unclip the routing clip that fits the muffler to the rear park brake cables. Then, with a 1/2 inch wrench, press down the tabs on the retainer to free the cable from the console bracket. Lift the vehicle and remove the rear wheel and tire from the service side, after that take out the parking brake shoes. To remove the cable from the actuating lever and brake adapter, squeeze together the tab locks of the retainer. Take out the bolts that hold the routing clips for the brake cable to the frame rail and pluck out the park brake cable and grommet from the floor panning. During installation, put the new cable through the floor pan and make sure the sealing grommet is all the way in place. Fix the proper routing clips onto the rear frame rail and screw them in place. Secure the park brake cable to the brake pedal bracket, then put in the shoes, the hub and bearing, rotor and caliper. Instal the rear wheel and tire assembly, fit them snugly with a crisscross pattern at first and only after that, make them extra tight using 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Bring the vehicle back down so that the seal grommet fits groove-side-up in the floor pan. Pull the park brake cable under the carpeting so it ends in the center console bracket and place it into the bracket, making sure the two little tabs are pushed outward as there should be. Secure the bracket for the park brake cables to the underside of the car on the floor pan. Throw away the output cable retaining clip and tension equalizer and fit new versions when installing the board. Open the old retainer and unhook the tension equalizer from the cable at the park brake lever and place a new tension equalizer in its place, followed by securely locking the new bracket. Loosen the parking brake by holding the lever at its lowest point and tighten the adjusting nut until 26 mm of the thread are exposed. Apply the lever firmly once to lock the string, then remove the pressure to reset it. Make sure that the rear wheels turn easily with the park brake lever released and that the lever feels stiff and allows no more than 21 clicks when you press it. After that, replace the center floor console, the rear carpeting, both doorsill plate moldings and the rear seat cushion.
