Determine how tightly the rings fit in the ring groove by inserting a feeler gauge 12 mm (0.50 inch) underneath the ring on top of the piston; by the specifications, how much clearance should exist between the ring and the groove determined by inspection. Fit the rings so the manufacturer I.D. mark is toward the top of the piston, starting with the oil ring expander and going on to the upper oil ring side rail, the lower oil ring side rail, the intermediate No. 2 piston ring and finally the No. 1 upper piston ring. For installation, make one side rail rest between the piston ring groove and expander, hold it in place and press it down so it sits at the proper place without a piston ring expander. Put on the upper rail, then the lower rail to follow and after that, the No. 2 piston ring and No. 1 piston ring. Align piston ring end and oil ring expander gaps correctly and leave a space of no less than 45° between them and the gaps on the side rails so that oil control is maintained.
