Take the piston rings off by using a suitable ring expander to remove the upper and intermediate piston rings first, next the upper oil ring side rail, lower oil ring side rail and finally the oil ring expander. Clean the spaces around the ring with a proper cleaning tool. When putting in the rings, make certain that the mark on their faces shines upwards toward the top section of the piston. Red rings go on first, with their manufacturer's labels facing the rafters. This order starts with the oil ring expander, follows with the upper oil ring side rail and continues with the lower oil ring side rail, the No. 2 intermediate piston ring and finishes with the No. 1 upper piston ring. Install the oil ring expander first, after that set the upper rail to its place and finish by putting the lower rail in from the outer edge of the oil ring expander, sticking it in the piston's groove, holding it with your hands and pressing down carefully. Following that, put in No. 2 piston ring, then No. 1 piston ring. Create an adequate distance between the piston ring end gaps and place oil ring expander gaps at least 45° from the side rail gaps to minimize oil use, making sure the gaps are not at the piston pin center or going in the thrust direction.
