2001 Chrysler Town & Country Camshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Camshaft on 2001 Chrysler Town & Country?
A: First, take out the whole engine assembly from the vehicle and remove the cylinder heads to work on the camshaft. After that, unhook the timing chain and the camshaft sprocket, remove the hydraulic lifters and note where every tappet was originally placed so you can put them back correctly. After removing the camshaft thrust plate, stick a long bolt into the front end of the camshaft and screw it in to help ease its removal. Carefully pull out the camshaft so you do not harm the camshaft bearings, as you change the camshaft bearings with the engine block. Watch for uneven wear and damage on the lobes and bearings of the camshaft and replace it if needed. If the camshaft is changed due to worn lobes or damage, the lifters must be replaced also. When checking lobe wear, make sure the standard is 0.0254 mm (0.001 inch) and the permitted maximum is 0.254 mm (0.010 inch), so the camshaft should be changed when wear passes these marks. Before installing the camshaft, smear the cam lobes and bearing areas with engine oil and assist with installation using a long bolt. Install the camshaft thrust plate and tighten its bolts to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.) torque, checking that camshaft end play meets the requirements; if not, replace the thrust plate. When you change the camshaft, remove and reinstall the timing chain and sprockets and remember to place all hydraulic lifters and reused ones back in place. After that, bolt the timing chain cover, cylinder heads, cylinder head covers, lower and upper intake manifolds and the engine together.
