2001 Dodge Dakota Dimmer Switch Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service a Dimmer Switch on 2001 Dodge Dakota?
A: First, cut off the air bag system by taking out the battery negative cable and waiting two minutes for the capacitor to empty; only then can you work on the switch. Take out the steering column cover from the center of the instrument panel. When your vehicle has this feature, reach for the tilt steering column knob and pull it out to remove it from the tilt steering column adjuster. Unscrew the two screws from the steering column that join the upper shroud and the lower shroud and press inward on each edge, pulling up on the upper shroud to release the snaps. Start by removing the upper shroud, then remove the one center screw that holds the lower shroud to the lock assembly of the steering column and remove the lower shroud. Disconnect the wire harness for the multi-function switch from the instrument panel first. Unscrew the multi-function switch from the mounting housing afterward. Pull the switch control at the steering wheel directly towards the car's back to turn off all-wheel drive. Put the switch onto the holder and tighten it with the two screws to 2 Nm (20 in. lbs.). Associate the wire harness under the steering wheel and put on the lower shroud; then install the center screw while tightening it to 2 Nm (20 in. lbs.). Set the upper shroud correctly so the gearshift lever gap hider engages when present, keep the snap points aligned and push by hand to fix them into position. Put the two screws into the upper shroud and into the lower shroud to hold them together. Tighten them using a torque wrench to 2 Nm (20 in. lbs.). If possible, move the steering column knob to suit the lever on the adjustable steering column and push it down hard on the lever. Next, place the steering column opening cover and hook the negative cable back to the battery.
