2001 Dodge Dakota Leaf Spring Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Properly Remove and Install a Leaf Spring on 2001 Dodge Dakota?
A: First, jack up the rear by placing the lift under the crossmember just aft of the rear axle to keep the side rail flange from bending. Support the car frame with the jack, then use the jack to lift off the axle weight to remove the assembly. Then, remove the nuts, U-bolts and spring plate from the axle, along with the nut and bolt from the spring front eye and the nut and bolt that secures the spring shackle to the rear frame bracket. The last step is to take out the spring from the vehicle. To perform an installation, lift the back of your vehicle and place the lift once again underneath the frame rail crossmember. Secure the spring shackle to the spring finger, put the spring on the rear axle pad such that its center bolt is in the pad locating hole, place the front spring eye through the bolt hole of the front frame bracket and attach the spring eye bolt and nut, tightening the nut with your fingers. Pull the spring shackle eye over the threaded bolt hole and push the bolt through the spring shackle, including the nut, then tightly lock the eye nut with your fingers. When working on 4x4s, attach the spring seat, U-bolts, spring plate and nuts, followed by tightening the U-bolt nuts to 149 Nm (110 ft. lbs.) use a DIY impact wrench. Lift the car a few inches and insert wheel and tire assemblies, then lift until the vehicle remains off the floor and steadily lower until the springs take over supporting the car. Lastly, turn both the spring eye pivot bolt and all shackle nut screws to a tension of 163 Nm (120 ft. lbs.).
