2001 Dodge Durango Exhaust Valve Parts and Q&A
Q: How Are Exhaust Valves and Intake Valves Cleaned, Inspected, and Serviced on 2001 Dodge Durango?
A: Scrub the valves entirely and remove those that show any burns, warping or traces of cracking. You should use a trusted guide cleaner to scrub away carbon and varnish inside the valve guides. Replace valve stems that are 0.05 millimeters (0.002 inches) or more above the normal limit. Once Valve Guide Sleeve Tool C-3973 is placed on the valve stem and the valve is installed, use the sleeve to bring the valve up to the right height for measuring with a dial indicator. Set the cylinder head at an angle so that you can mount the dial indicator C-3339 and watch the indicator as you move the valve through its range; the difference in readings should be less than 0.432 mm (0.017 inch). Use oversize reams in your guides on valves to clean out built-up readings or if the stem on the valve looks scuffed or has marks. Special highly oversize valve stems are available and to fit them the guides should be reamed first from standard to 0.0763 mm (0.003 inch), then from 0.0763 mm to 0.381 mm (0.015 inch). The intake and exhaust valves in this design have a face angle between 43-1/4° and 43-3/4° and a seat angle between 44-1/4° and 44-3/4°. Check the margin of the remaining valves after refacing; throw away any that are smaller than 1.190 mm (0.047 inch). During valve seat refacing, the proper valve guide pilot should be used to produce an accurate surface. Ensure the diameter of the valve seat is the same in all directions with a dial indicator, so that total runout is no more than 0.051 mm (0.002 inch). Apply Prussian blue to the valve seat; if the center of the valve face becomes blue, the contact is fine. Should the abraded zone be located on the top edge, decrease the valve height by 15°; should it be on the bottom edge, increase valve height by 60°. Intake seats have a width range of 1.016 - 1.524 mm (0.040 - 0.060 inch) and exhaust seats need to be 1.524 mm to 2.032 mm (0.060 to 0.080 inch). After valves are taken apart, do a test on their valve springs before putting them back. Say the spring is supposed to compress 1-5/16 in. Put the spring's end over the 1-5/16 in. mark on the tool and place the zero mark at the front. Cover the stud with the spring and lift the lever to get the tone device into position. Wait until you hear a loud ping from the torque wrench and then multiplied the reading by 2 to find the spring load at the test length. If the springs do not follow specifications, dispose of them.
