2001 Dodge Durango Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Steering Knuckle on 2001 Dodge Durango?
A: Start by lifting and supporting the vehicle and next remove the wheel and tire from the steering knuckle. After that, remove the disc brake caliper, rotor, shield and ABS speed sensor and then unplug the tie-rod from the steering knuckle arm. Take out the hub or bearing as well as the shock absorber. To compress the coil spring, fit the Spring Compressor DD-1278 onto the suspension arm, spring and upper shock mount and tighten the nut that's found at the bottom switch. After you have removed the lower ball joint nut, detach the ball joint from the knuckle using the supplied Remover C-4150A and then repeat the same process for the upper ball joint with Remover MB-991113, ensuring you don't harm the ball joint seal. Hold the new steering knuckle against the lower and upper ball joints, screw in the nuts, tighten the lower nut to 127 Nm (94 ft. lbs.), secure the upper nut with 81 Nm (60 ft. lbs.) and then add new cotter pins to both nuts. When you have removed the spring compressor, add the shock absorber, hub/bearing, ABS speed sensor, brake dust shield, rotor and caliper in that order. Next, tie the tie rod to the steering knuckle arm, connect the wheel and tire and remove the support to bring the vehicle down.
