2001 Dodge Neon Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Repair an Automatic Transmission Filter on 2001 Dodge Neon?
A: Before you start service on the fluid filter, lift the car on a hoist and put the drain container under the transaxle oil pan. After loosening the bolts on the pan, tap one area near the drain and allow the oil to get out before removing the pan. After that, unscrew the oil filter-to-valve body screws and remove the oil filter and its gasket. Replace the old filter and gasket, wash the oil pan and magnet and fix the pan back in place with Mopar® Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant, applying 19 Nm (165 inch lbs.) of torque to the bolts. Put four quarts of Mopar® ATF +4 (Automatic Transmission Fluid-Type 9602) down the dipstick opening, turn on the engine and allow it to idle for about one minute. After pressing the brakes, gently take the selector lever through every position until you reach park or neutral. After the transaxle has cooled, look at the transaxle dipstick. Add fluid to bring the level just below the "ADD" sign, then wait until the transaxle reaches 180°F and recheck again. Press the dipstick all the way into the transaxle to keep the oil from becoming dirty. Another option is the dipstick tube fluid suction method, so ensure the transaxle has reached its full operating temperature, pick a suitable device for fluid evacuation and insert its line into the dipstick tube down to the lowest level in the oil pan. Once you pull the suction line, put in four quarts of Mopar® ATF +4 (Automatic Transmission Fluid-Type 9602) by pouring it down the dipstick hole on top of the transmission, begin the engine and repeat the instructions for level adjustment.
