2001 Dodge Neon Piston Ring Set Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What is the Proper Method for Installing a Piston Ring Set on 2001 Dodge Neon?
A: When taking out the piston rings, place yourself so that the identification mark located on both the upper and intermediate piston rings is done toward the crown of the piston and use an appropriate ring expander to remove them. Following this, remove the upper oil ring side rail, lower oil ring side rail and oil ring expander from the piston and scrub any carbon inside the ring grooves. Set the rings so that the manufacturer's mark is up and facing you as follows: oil ring expander, upper oil ring side rail, lower oil ring side rail, No. 2 intermediate piston ring and No. 1 upper piston ring. Install the oil ring expander first, fit the upper rail next, position the lower rail after that and secure it in place without using a piston ring expander. Then, put in No. 2 piston ring and then in No. 1 piston ring, making sure the ring gaps are set smoothly. The oil ring expander should be at least 45° away from the side rail gaps and shouldn't be placed on the piston pin center or in thrust direction, as this inconsistency helps manage oil pressure.
