Dodge Neon Piston Ring Set Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Properly Service and Repair a Piston Ring Set During an Engine Overhaul on Dodge Neon?
    A:
For Piston ring service, make sure to do all of the necessary machining and mating as required during a full engine overhaul which covers the cylinder block and bore, connecting rod and bearings, Crankshaft and bearings, valve train parts, engine oil, valves, seats, springs, rockers and pistons. During disassembly and assembly of the smaller subassemblies, you service the cylinder head, cylinder block, hydraulic tappets if they are present, oil pump and valves. Procedure involves checking and cleaning the cylinder head, cylinder block, both shafts and their journals, two manifolds and the valve train pieces. A separate service procedure for an internal engine component usually means the manufacturer did not include one.
  • Q: What is the Proper Method for Installing a Piston Ring Set on Dodge Neon?
    A:
Use a compatible ring expander to take out the upper and intermediate Piston rings, then remove the upper oil ring side rail, lower oil ring side rail and oil ring expander from the piston. Completely remove all carbon deposits from the ring grooves. The top of the piston should be above the identification mark on the face of the upper and intermediate rings while installing. While installing, the side up on each ring should have the manufacturer's mark; start with the oil ring expander, then the top oil ring rail, bottom oil ring rail, No. 2 ring in the middle and end with the upper piston ring. Start with the oil ring expander, then install the upper side rail after that, then the lower side rail with its first end located between the piston ring groove and the oil ring expander, making sure to hold it down as you press. Don't use a piston ring expander to expand the rings for this job. Afterward, set up No. 2 piston ring and follow it with the No. 1 piston ring. Place the piston ring end gaps at the proper locations and ensure there is about 45° between the oil ring expander gap and the side rail gaps. Avoid letting the gaps line up with the piston pin center or its thrust direction, because this is necessary for good oil control.
