Q: How to Remove and Install an Intake Manifold on 2001 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Start by taking away the negative cable from the battery and draining the cooling system. After that, take out the A/c compressor, generator and accessory drive bracket and then the air cleaner. Release the pressure in the fuel system and take out the fuel lines. If installed, unhook the accelerator linkage, speed control and transmission kickdown cables and remove the return spring. Take the distributor cap and wires off, cut the coil connections, the wire to the heat indicator and all the heater hoses and the bypass hose. Take out the closed crankcase ventilation and evaporation control systems, next disconnect and remove the intake manifold bolts and then lift them out of the engine compartment joined. Throw away the front and back cross-over gaskets and the flange side gaskets before removing the throttle body. If the plenum pan is in place, discard its gasket as well. If you took off the plenum pan, put a new gasket in place and install the plenum pan, first tighten to 5.4 Nm (48 in. lbs.), then to 9.5 Nm (84 in. lbs.) and finally check it again at 9.5 Nm (84 in. lbs.). Put the Mopar Gen Ii Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant or a similar sealant, on the four corners of the joint after fitting the throttle body onto the intake manifold with a new gasket. Attach the front and rear cross-over gaskets, after which install the flange gaskets, aligning them with the tabs on the cylinder head gasket and making sure the words Manifold Side are visible on each gasket. Gently set the intake manifold onto the cylinder block and heads, centering it with the alignment dowels from the cross-over gaskets. With the seals secure, place bolts into the intake manifold and tighten as instructed on the torque chart. Replace the closed crankcase ventilation and evaporation control modules, connect the coil wires, heat indicator wire and both hoses. First, add the distributor cap and wires, then set the return spring in place and join the components that connect to the accelerator, speed control and transmission kickdown. Set the fuel lines in place, assemble the accessory drive bracket, add the A/c compressor, install the generator and attach the drive belt, tightening the mounting bolt on the generator to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) torque. After that, place the air cleaner, top up the coolant and link the negative terminal to the battery again.
