2001 Dodge Ram 2500 Crankshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install the Crankshaft with the Engine Still on 2001 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: When changing the crankshaft, forget the transmission before continuing to remove the oil pan and the oil pump from the rear main bearing cap. Following that, take out the vibration damper and the timing chain cover. Open the rod bearing caps using the appropriate tool, take out the bearings and support the crankshaft while you do this to keep it safe. After using a jack to raise the crankshaft properly, take out each primary bearing cap and bearing and then remove the crankshaft from the block. Disconnect and remove both rear and front crankshaft oil seals. After cleaning Gasket Maker and sealant from both mating surfaces, apply Mopar Gasket Maker only. Brush a small amount of oil on the upper seal of the new seal and place the new upper rear bearing oil seal with the white part facing towards the rear of your engine. Fit the crankshaft into the cylinder block, oil the new lower seal lips gently and put the new lower rear bearing oil seal into the bearing cap with the white paint side facing backward. Dab a 5 mm amount of Mopar Gasket Maker on each side of the rear main bearing cap, but not on the rubber seal and fasten the cap in place on the cylinder block right after. Use the bearing cap slot, alignment dowel and cap bolts to align the bearing cap, removing fewer excess materials and striking at the rear no more than two times. Brush or oil all cap bolts, then screw in all main bearing caps and tighten them alternately to 115 Nm. Replace the oil pump, timing chain cover and vibration damper. Place the connecting rods on the crankshaft and screw the caps with rod bearings over them, using tension bolts tightened to 61 Nm. Squeeze some Mopar Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant onto the seal of the bearing cap and coat the joint, wiping excess from the oil pan groove afterward. At last, put the new front crankshaft oil seal into place and the oil pan and if the transmission came out, install it again.
