2001 Dodge Ram 2500 Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A
Q: Can You Replace the Crankshaft Seal Without Removing the Timing Chain Cover on 2001 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: Before performing this fix, detach the negative cable from the battery and pull off the vibration damper. To assure proper alignment between the oil seal and crankshaft, use oil seal installation/alignment Tool 6635; the seal must fit with only little resistance or else the cover must be fixed and installed correctly again. Take care not to injure the cover's crankshaft seal bore while prying the oil seal outward with a proper tool. Put the thinner edge of your oil seal onto the Front Oil Seal Installation Tool 6635 and make it lie in the groove. Lay the seal and the tool onto the crankshaft and tighten the vibration damper bolt to pull the seal into place. Upon completion, remove both the vibration damper bolt and the seal installation tool, look at the flange on the vibration damper, insert it in place and reconnect the negative cable to the battery.
