2001 Dodge Ram 2500 Exhaust Valve Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair Exhaust Valve and Intake Valves on 2001 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: To look after valves, start by cleaning them well and throwing away any that are worn out, damaged or destroyed. Use a proven guide cleaner to get rid of carbon and varnish inside the valve guides. If the valve stem wears more than 0.051 mm (0.002 inch), change it. To measure Valve Stem Guide Clearance, place Valve Guide Sleeve Tool C-3973 over the valve stem and install the valve to the proper height for measuring with dial indicator Tool C-3339 fastened to the cylinder head. Operation of the valve should not lead the reading over 0.432 mm (0.017 inch), when going from the indicator to another indicator, back and forth. Should the reading appear large or the stems have marks, ream the guides for valves with oversized stems, using steps 1 and 2 to change the size from standard to 0.381 mm (0.015 inch). At the beginning, I ream the hole only to 0.0763 mm (0.003 inch); then I ream it again to size at 0.381 mm (0.015 inch). The angle on refacing both valves and seats for the intake and exhaust should be between 43-1/4° and 43-3/4° for the face and between 44-1/4° and 44-3/4° for the seats. When the refacing is complete, review the rest of the rust margin; if there's less than 1.190 mm (0.047 inch), discard those valves. Reseating valve stones requires you to use the correct size valve guide pilot for a true finish. Using a dial indicator, test the concentricity of the valve seat and check that the total runout does not go past 0.051 mm (0.002 inch). Check contact between the valve and its seat using Prussian blue; if the center of the valve turns blue, the contact is right. Adjust the valve seat depending on where the blue places the paint where you wish to transfer. Intake seats need to be 1.016 - 1.524 mm (0.040 - 0.060 inch) and exhaust seats should measure 1.524 - 2.032 mm (0.060 - 0.080 inch). As soon as you need to inspect, recondition or replace valves, always test the springs inside them. For instance, our spring has a compression length of 1-5/16 inch. Put the Universal Valve Spring Tester Tool at the 1-5/16 inch mark and make sure the zero is at the start. Lay the spring across the stud and lift the lever that compresses the tone to set the device in place. Turn the torque wrench by hand until you hear a ping and use the reading it gives you, then multiply that number by 2 to find the spring load at test length. Elbow springs that do not meet the specifications should be put aside.
