2001 Dodge Ram 3500 Radiator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Properly Remove and Install a Radiator on 2001 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: Turn off the battery and drain the radiator, then remove the drain plugs from the block and radiator drain after the coolant has cooled down, to prevent you from being burned by hot or under-pressure engine fluids. Handle constant tension hose clamps with the ProTiming tool 6094 or even Snap-On HPC20 for larger clamps and wear eyeglasses when working with the tools. When you need to fix called tension clamps, only use OEM clamps with matching stamped letters or numbers. Once the hose clamps are off, remove the radiator hoses and the hose from the radiator's filler neck nipple. When this is done, pull the coolant reserve/overflow tank straight from the fan shroud. Take out the reservoir tank, unhook the wires at the reservoir and then move the shroud beyond the fan toward the back and into place over the blades. Take out the plastic retained by the rubber shields from the edges of the radiator, place the shields on one side and then use a wrench to unscrew both top bolts, then lift out the radiator and ensure you don't harm the fins of tubing underneath. Debris on the radiator fins can be removed by spraying cold water and compressed air to the back of the radiator as soon as you finish driving. Look at the radiator side tanks for tears or gaps, see if the seal between the tanks and core is leaking and spot any problems with bending, corrosion or loss of cooling fins or tubes. Place the fan shroud on the fan blades facing the engine, secure rubber insulators to the alignment dowels at the lower part of the radiator and position the radiator so the alignment dowels slide into the lower radiator support. After fitting the radiator with the two upper mounting bolts and tightening them to 11 Nm (95 inch lbs.), put the rubber shields near the radiator sides and clip them in place. After joining both radiator hoses and adding the hose clamps, put in the windshield washer reservoir tank and screw the fan shroud into the sides of the radiator using mounting bolts tightened to 50 inch lbs. Fit the coolant reserve/overflow tank hose to the radiator filler neck nipple, install the coolant reserve/overflow tank on the fan shroud, rehook the battery negative cables, set the heater to its full heat position, add coolant to the system, turn on the engine until it gets to normal temperature and monitor the coolant fluid level while it runs.
