2001 Dodge Stratus Brake Caliper Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rear Brake Caliper on 2001 Dodge Stratus?
A: Press the brake pedal down until the brake fluid reaches the first inch above empty in the reservoir and then clamp it in place with the depressor. Raise the car and take out the rear wheel and tire. Remove the banjo bolt from the brake caliper and throw out the two washers as you go. Pull out the two guide pin bolts that fit through the caliper and the adapter next. Open the caliper by rotating the top part from the adapter and lifting it off the machined piece below. When installing, retract the caliper piston to the end of the bore and coat both adapter abutments with either Mopar® Multipurpose Lubricant or a substitute. If you take off the rotor, remember to place it on the hub so it is completely square. Carefully place the caliper and brake shoes over the rotor so that the guide pin bolts, bushings and sleeves are not touching the adapter bosses. Be careful that the caliper guide pin bolts are not cross-threaded while you install them and tighten them until you reach 22 Nm (192 inch lbs.). Attach the brake hose to the caliper by using a special fitting washer on every end, slipping the banjo bolt into the hose and the caliper and tighten it to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.). Mount the old tires and place the wheels on the hubs. Tighten the wheel stud nuts to half strength in the right order, then repeat that with the rest of the nuts to meet the specified torque of 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Reduce the vehicle, take out the brake pedal depressor, drain the brake system, let the brakes bleed into the caliper and go for a brief ride to ensure the pads are working.
