2001 Jeep Cherokee Ignition Coil Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Replace an Ignition Coil Assembly on 2001 Jeep Cherokee?
A: The engine requires a coil rail with three coils that should replace the old coils at once, all a single unit. The part of the coil nearest to the engine has six rubber boots that secure the spark plugs; each includes a spring for connecting electricity. Before you remove the coil, take the negative battery cable off first. Those four bolts that attach the coil to the cylinder head should be taken off. Apply pressure between the plugs and the coil assembly, alternating sides and check to see if the rubber boots are free-if not, use a boot removal tool for help. When the coil is loose from the spark plugs, guide it to where its primary electrical connector is, push the tab outward to slip the connector off and then pull the connector out of the coil by hand. When you remove the coil, then insert the rubber boots on the spark plugs and keep pushing the coil assembly down to have the bolt bases touch the cylinder head. Put in the four mounting bolts, tighten them a little in the beginning and lastly tighten them to 29 Nm (250 in. lbs.), making sure not to use full torque on any bolt at the start. Attach the end of the engine harness connector to the coil, then slide the tab closer to the engine for a secure fit and after that, join the negative battery cable.
