2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Timing Cover Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Timing Cover on 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before anything else, make sure to take the negative battery cable out of the connector. Revolve the bearings so they are free and unbolt the damper, fan, hub assembly and fan shroud. Remove the accessory drive brackets from the timing case cover, next take the A/C compressor (if present) and the generator bracket off the engine cylinder head and place them aside. Get rid of the bolts between the oil pan and timing case cover as well as the bolts where the timing case sits on the cylinder block, then pull the cover together with its gasket away from the engine. Open the timing cover front and pry off the oil seal on the crankshaft. Clean the gasket surfaces of the cover of the timing case, oil pan and cylinder block. With the exposed end inside, place a new crankshaft oil seal in the timing case cover using Seal Installation Tool 6139 to support the cover at the seal area. First, put the gasket on the cylinder block and afterwards, lay the timing case cover on the oil pan gasket and cylinder block. Use Insert Timing Case Cover Alignment and Seal Installation Tool 6139 to fit into the crankshaft opening on the cover. Attach the timing case cover to the cylinder block and mount the oil pan to the timing case cover, fastening the cover bolts to the block using 7 Nm (60 in. lbs.), the 1/4 inch cover-to-block bolts in the front with 22 Nm (192 in. lbs.) and the 1/4 inch bolts between the oil pan and cover with 9.5 Nm (84 in. lbs.). Talk with your dealer about removing the cover alignment tool, lubricating the vibration damper contact area with a light coating of engine oil and using Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant on the keyway in the crankshaft before fitting the key. After installing the key, fit the vibration damper, then insert the A/C compressor (if it's there) and finally tighten the generator bracket assembly. Place the engine fan, hub assembly and shroud on the engine and tie the serpentine belt on. After that, reconnect the negative cable to the battery.
