2001 Jeep Wrangler Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service Axle Shafts on a 194RBI Rear Axle on 2001 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Before servicing rearn axle 194RBI axle shafts, lift and support the car and place it in neutral. Unmount first the wheel and tire assembly, then the brake drum. Wipe away any foreign material from the housing cover and then take off the cover. Turning the differential case helps you get to the pinion mate gear shaft lock screw, so you can remove it and the pinion mate gear shaft. In order to take out the axle shaft C-clip lock, press the axle shaft shaft towards the hub and pull out the axle shaft, ensuring you don't damage the axle shaft's bearing, seal or the ABS-connected wheel speed sensor. Look for signs of brinelling, galling or pitting on the roller bearing contact and check the seal around the axle shaft, because any damage found should result in replacing the axle, bearing and seal accordingly. When installing, apply gear lubricant inside both the axle bore and seal lip, then, insert the axle shaft into the seal and bearing from the inside and place it into the splines on the side gears without affecting the sensor or seal lip. Slide the C-clip lock into the tip of the axle shaft and squeeze the C-clip lock into the side gear. Now, insert the pinion mate shaft into the differential case after sliding the two thrust washers onto it, making sure the hole on the pinion matches the one in the case and attach the lock screw with Loctite, tightening it to 19 Nm (14 ft. lbs.). Afterward, fit the cover, add the brake fluid, reattach the brake drum, the wheel and tire and lower the vehicle down.
