2002 Jeep Wrangler Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain an Axle Shaft on 2002 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Elevate the vehicle and support it firmly, after which you need to remove the wheel and tire. After that, remove the brake caliper, rotor and wheel speed sensor if it has one. After getting the cotter pin, the nut retainer and the axle nut, get the hub bolts. Detach the hub bearing from the steering knuckle and, as you remove the axle shaft assembly from the axle, watch out for the oil seals in the housing. After that, remove the brake rotor shield from the hub bearing or knuckle. Before putting the wheels on, clean the shaft, add a bit of Mopar Wheel Bearing Grease or an equal grease to the shaft splines seals and hub bore. Once the protective brake rotor shield is on the knuckle, place the axle shaft assembly into the end of the housing and engage it with the oil seals at the differential. Instead of tightening the nut and hub of the right-hand side to spec, install the hub and tighten the bolts to 102 Nm (75 ft. lbs.), then the axle washer and nut with 237 Nm (175 ft. lbs.) and finally attach the nut retainer and a new cotter pin. After that, put the wheel and tire assembly on, attach the support, lift the car, replace the wheel speed sensor when equipped, attach the caliper and rotor and lower the vehicle.
