Q: How to Replace a Timing Belt on 2002 Chrysler 300M?
A: First, disconnect the negative cable from the remote jumper terminal, remove the radiator upper crossmember, radiator fan, accessory drive belts, crankshaft vibration damper and front timing belt covers. Note in which direction the belt moves if it's going to be reused. Rotate the engine by hand until the descried marks are correctly positioned, by ensuring the crankshaft mark fits the TDC mark on the oil pump housing and the camshaft sprocket timing marks are between the marks on the rear covers. Check and label the position of the camshaft sprocket timing mark next to the timing marks on the rear cover. While keeping everything lined up, eliminate the tensioner and remove the belt, because over-compression can cause damage. Steps to observe while removing the camshaft sprockets are having the crankshaft sprocket at TDC, clamping Special Tools 6642 to set the camshafts and finally removing the timing belt. With a 36 mm box end wrench, keep the camshaft sprocket steady and undo the bolts; you will find that the right bolt is 213 mm long and the left bolt is 255 mm long. When working on the crankshaft sprocket, take off the timing belt and apply Special Tool L-4407-A for removal. Check for any damage or wear on the timing belt and if it's damaged, put in a new belt of the correct length. While doing the installation, match the crankshaft sprocket to where the TDC mark was located, align the camshaft sprockets to your reference marks and place the timing belt in the counterclockwise direction under tension. After you install the tensioner and tighten it to 28 Nm, check the timing marks after the crankshaft is rotated for two revolutions. After this, install the timing belt covers, crankshaft dampener, drive belt system, radiator fan and upper radiator support and reconnect the negative battery cable. Place bolts through the holes of the sprocket and remember to use the right length as indicated by the manufacturer on each side of the camshaft sprocket. Slide the timing belt into place, push the tensioner pulley against the belt and attach the reset timing belt tensioner, tightening each bolt to 28 Nm. Place the number 1 piston at TDC with the dial indicator and then tighten the camshaft bolts to the specified values. After that, set the spark plug in place, disconnect the alignment tools, attach the cam retainer/thrust plates and O-rings and finally add the timing belt covers, crankshaft vibration damper, the accessory belts and fill your cooling system. Before installing the timing belt, fit Special Tools 6641 and C-4685-C1 to the crankshaft sprocket to measure the stiffness needed for installation.
