2002 Chrysler Prowler Control Arm Parts and Q&A
Q: How to remove a control arm on 2002 Chrysler Prowler?
A: Using a trim stick to be gentle, remove the center cap of the wheel before you work on the control arm. Relax the stub shaft hub nut, but do not remove it and then raise the vehicle before taking off the tire and wheel fitment. Then, take out the two guide pin bolts that keep the rear disc brake caliper to the caliper adapter. Rotate the caliper free end away from the adapter and lift it off. Attach the calipers to the shock bracket with wire or a tie strap so that the weight of the calipers won't be placed on the flex hose. Take out the brake rotor from the hub and the bearing and afterward remove the stub shaft hub nut. Insert Puller, Special Tool 6790, into the hub and bearing flange with the puller bolt in the center of the stub shaft. Pull the stub axle back just 1 inch with the hub and bearing so the rib at C/V joint housing is aligned with the rear surface of the knuckle, so you don't risk damaging the couplings. With the three bolts removed, pull apart the hub and bearing and caliper adapter from the knuckle and then use Demco Puller, Special Tool 6790, to split the hub bearing from the outer C/V joint stub axle. With the various components apart, unclip the parking brake cable from the actuator on the back of the caliper, remove the caliper adapter and park brake shoes as a group and lay them aside. Then, take out the nut and washer that hold the knuckle to the lower ball joint stud, then the nut from the shock to the lower control arm and finally the nut and bolt joining the rear shock to the isolator bushing. Remover, Special Tool 8183, should be used to separate the ball joint from the knuckle by tightening it against the stud after inserting the tool into the hub/bearing mounting bolt holes at the back of the knuckle. With the bolts on the frame support strut undone, take out the two pivot bolts from the lower control arm, then move the control arm out of the vehicle.
