2002 Chrysler Prowler Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Rear Wheel Bearing on 2002 Chrysler Prowler?
A: With a trim stick, detach the center cap from the rear wheel so as not to hurt the finish. So support the car with tires and turn on the parking brake, unbolt the the stub shaft hub nut without removing it. First, drive the car onto a jack, then undo the tie and take the wheel and tire off the vehicle. Remove the guide pin bolts that attach the rear disc brake caliper to the caliper adapter and after that, move the caliper's free end away from the caliper adapter and lift it clear of the machined abutment. Attach the caliper to one end of the shock absorber bracket, so the flex hose does not take on the weight. Get rid of the brake rotor and then remove the stub shaft hub nut. Slot Puller, Special Tool 6790, on to the hub and bearing flange, placing the bolt from the puller into the center of the stub shaft. Pull the stub axle out far enough so that the rib on the end of the C/V joint housing is one inch away from the rear part of the knuckle, but make sure you don't go further to protect the driveshaft joints. With the three bolts that hold the hub and bearing and the caliper adapter, make sure not to completely remove them. Only unthread them a bit. Puller, Special Tool 6790, should be used to remove the hub and bearing from the stub shaft. When putting the hub and bearing on the stub shaft, be sure to face the part with the three mounting bolts and start turning them by hand. Screw all bolts down evenly until the caliper adapter and hub and bearing fit securely on the knuckle and hold 108 Nm (80 ft. lbs.) of torque. Attach the hub nut for the stub axle and lighten the bolt, next position the brake rotor on the hub and its special bearing. Attach the disc brake caliper in the reverse order you took it off and use a torque wrench to fasten the caliper guide pins to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.). Attach the wheel and tire, tighten the nuts in the proper order to just over half the required strength and do the full tightening when the tool reaches 136 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Set the vehicle on the ground, engage the parking brake and ask someone to press the brake on the vehicle to hold it in place. Use a torque wrench to tighten the stub shaft hub nut to 142 Nm (105 ft. lbs.). Then, install the center cap back on the wheel.
