2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser Alternator Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair an Alternator on 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Before working on the alternator, open the lid of the air cleaner, disable the air sensor and makeup air hose and unattach the negative battery cable. Open the upper nut on the generator and lift the vehicle with a hoist. After that, take off the right front wheel and the splash shield and remove the support bracket. Rearrange any balls or spacers so that they will not stick together. Unhook the field circuit from the generator, remove the nut and wire from the B+ terminal and don't forget to get rid of the generator belt. Remove the axle nut, pull the control arm away from the steering knuckle and quickly extract the axle shaft into the container under the transmission. Remove the bolt and nut holding the generator lower mounting bracket to the upper adjustment bracket, then lift the generator from the bottom. When installing, place the generator and loosen the bolt and nut temporarily. Attach the generator belt, axle shaft and lower control arm again to the steering knuckle. Screw the ball joint nut on the lower arm and the retaining nut on the axle. Connect the support bracket once again and thread the B+ terminal nut and cable through it, making sure the wire is 21 mm apart from the terminal nut. After that, attach the field circuit to the generator, place the accessory drive splash shield and turn on the right front wheel. Lower the car, tighten the upper pivot nut to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.), link the negative battery cable again and put back both the air cleaner lid with the inlet air temperature sensor and make-up hose. Also, it is important to look at the transmission fluid.
