2002 Chrysler Sebring CV Boot Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair an Inner CV Boot on 2002 Chrysler Sebring?
A: Before anything else, get rid of both the large and small clamps holding the inner tripod boot on the tripod housing and the shaft. With the bearings on the spider still held in place, take off the sealing boot from the tripod housing, slide it down the shaft while holding what is on the shaft, ensuring not to separate the bearings from the spider. Then, loosen the snap ring that keeps the spider assembly in place on the shaft and take out the assembly; if it does not move, gently tap it with a brass drift, not touching the outer tripod bearings. Once you've taken off the sealing boot, look over the spider assembly, tripod joint housing and connecting shaft for any noticeable wear. Changing any inspecting/worn areas will mean you also have to replace the driveshaft assembly. For installation, put the clamp on the interconnecting shaft first after which slide the boot onto the shaft so that the raised bead matches the groove on the shaft. Hook the spider assembly onto the interconnecting shaft, then press it down a bit so the snap ring can be seated in its correct position. Put half of the grease from the package into the seal boot and half into the tripod housing. Fit the tripod housing onto the spider assembly and the interconnecting shaft, make sure it is right on top and use the boot clamp to secure the inner tripod joint seal boot. Clamp the sealing boot onto the interconnecting shaft with C-4975-A Special Tool and check to make sure the seal is flat; if needed, straighten and flatten any part of the seal by hand. To expose the inner tripod joint assembly, insert a trim stick between the tripod joint and its boot, holding it evenly inside the tripod housing. Drop the shaft into the holders, remove the trim stick and line up the trilobal boot with the recesses in the tripod housing. For crimp type joint sealing boots, use Special Tool C-4975-A and for those with low profile latches, use Snap-On YA3050 or any equivalent, making certain the clamp is securely fastened.
